Week Twenty-one…COVID’s No Fun!

Image
Well another week is in the books and we learned some new things. Monday we were both feeling better so we went into the library in the morning. We did the basic stuff and attended a meeting and then went to host the escape room for a group of youth that was coming in to tour the library. We had a blast with them, giving them clues and helping them to try to get the puzzles solved. One of the things they have to learn to use is one of these old time microfilm readers. It’s fun watching the young kids try to figure it out. We have learned that these young kids have no clue about old technology. One of the other things they have to use is a cassette tape player. One group had a girl that called it a vhs player. One of the boys in the other group called it a record player. Hilarious. After helping three groups go through he escape room we got to go home, a little later than usual. Mom was starting to feel tired out, but we hung in there and actually attended our apartment-wide FHE be...

Week Twenty…We Had Plenty!

Image
So what did we have plenty of this week? I’ll tell you, along with what we learned. We got up very early…3:45am…to drive back to the Ontario airport to catch our 6am flight to Salt Lake City. The black Audi we had as our rental car—they didn’t have any cars in their Emerald Club  aisle so I was able to take one from the Executive Club aisle—performed wonderfully. I learned why people will pay more for some types of cars. It was quiet and powerful and comfy. I also learned that even though we were on the road at an insane hour in the morning, there were tons of other people needing to be on the road at that time as well, but we made it to the airport with plenty of time to catch the rental car shuttle and get through security and to our gate. They said our flight was on time, but we started boarding late, and sat at the gate a little longer than I thought we would, so we didn’t get back to Salt Lake City as soon as planned. So I sent a text and let our floor leaders  know...

Week Nineteen…The Weekend Was Really Keen!

Another week done. Wow! Here are the things we learned this week. Monday was a great day in the library. We had fun working on our country training as well as getting to help some people with their family history, but I also learned about what everyone here in the library calls an “Elijah Moment”. There was a patron that came into the library looking for a certain microfilm. He said he had looked exactly where it should be as well as in our overflow  area and it wasn’t there. He also mentioned that he had been into the library last Friday and couldn’t find it then. I was talking to our zone leader, but I suddenly felt the need to go search for the film. So I jumped up and went first to where it was supposed to be filed. Voila, there it was! But when I brought it back both he and my zone leader pointed out that I had gone to the wrong spot, where there was a 1 added to the number at the beginning. Ugh. So I took it back and went to the correct spot…no film. I decided to look at poss...

Week Eighteen…Passing Me Was Really Mean.

This week’s learning was all over the place, but here’s what we learned. Monday was Memorial Day  and that’s a day all about BBQ, right? So after our shift in the library…yes the library was open on Memorial Day…we headed out to find some good BBQ, since we aren’t allowed to have a BBQ grill at our apartment building. We found a place that had good reviews so we decided to try it out. It is called R&R BBQ. We learned that it is very good BBQ and worth the stars in its reviews. The only negative was that they were out of their famous ribs and we would have had to wait around for over an hour to get some. The brisket was wonderful. We learned that Memorial Day has a little different meaning here in Utah than other places where we have lived. Here the purpose of the day has broadened. It isn’t just a day to remember and give thanks to those who died fighting for our freedoms, it is a day to remember all those who have died. Kind of like a  Día de los Muertos. One of the siste...
