Week Forty-one…We Lost the Sun!

Howdy everyone. Here’s what we learned this week.

Monday we learned that moving our clocks back on Sunday means we walk home in the dark now. We have lost the sun. Sadness. We had a typical Monday in the library and then came home really quick before heading over to the COB for a Mission Devotional with Elder and Sister Martinez. He is in the Area Presidency for this area. We learned that he was a family practice doctor (he is retired) and his wife was also a doctor, a pediatrician. But Sister Martinez is also a lawyer. Wow, that’s a lot of schooling and work. They are from Puerto Rico and practiced medicine in Mississippi where they learned about and joined the Church. They spoke about enduring well. Not just making it through something, but learning and serving and becoming someone better as we endure. Afterwards we walked home and learned that they have put out more Christmas decorations around the Conference Center. Mom put her phone in this luminary to see how it would look. We learned that it doesn’t quite work as well as the little light that is in there. We are looking forward to when they will turn these on.

Tuesday on the way to working out in the COB gym we learned how they clean the windows on the COB. How would you like that job? We went in and worked out and learned that not very many people go to the gym around 9am. We had the place pretty much to ourselves. We got into the library at noon and I was able to finish the last of my Norway Advanced Training, but there wasn’t anyone there for me to pass it off with (I know that is poor English, but it’s too late to mess with it). Mom wanted to pass off her Italy Intermediate Training as well, but had the same problem. So we just helped and filled in wherever they needed us and closed down the joint at 8pm.

Wednesday was Pday. I learned that I can get a pretty good workout riding the stationary bike in the gym. My legs were tired from riding on Tuesday so Mom went to the gym alone. In the afternoon Mom had a doctor appointment and then we drove down to Orem to see The Music Man in the Orem Hale Center Theater. We got down there early and went to dinner at Jurassic Tacos which we learned makes a killer Burrosaurus. It is a burrito filled with a half pound of meat. Yum! When we got to the theater we learned that it is in an old house and is operated by the Hale’s son. It has a very small town feel and we weren’t sure what quality performance we were going to get. Well

we learned pretty quickly that it was a high quality performance. All the actors were incredible. Great singing voices and their use of the small stage was amazing. One of the best surprises was at the end when all the actors came out dressed in band uniforms and actually played the closing number for us, including Harold Hill on the trombone. It was very cool. You can see the kids in the background of this picture playing their trombones and trumpets and drums. They even threw in some saxophones. Even the kid who played Winthrop, who did a fantastic job singing and speaking with a lisp, played his trumpet. I saw in the program that they all apparently took music lessons and learned how to play for the performance. Pretty cool! After the show we were heading to the freeway and saw a Culver’s Frozen Custard still open so we got dessert. Great date night!

Thursday we learned that Elder and Sister Martinez were coming to visit the library and also wanted to visit some of the missionaries in their apartments. We were chosen for one of those visits and were asked to be home at 5:50pm for them to come by. So we worked in the library in the morning. Mom passed off her Italian Intermediate Training. I was floor lead when the Martinezes came on our floor and our Zone Leader briefly introduced me to them then they moved on. We later got an email saying that they were not going to be able to come visit in the evening at our apartment, so we had the evening free and watched another Christmas movie. Wahoo!

Friday we learned that our package with an extension cord and a timer was going to arrive. We went to the gym in the morning and hoped the package would arrive before we went in to the library, but it didn’t (said with a sad voice like Elder…ugh I can’t remember his name). So we went into the library for our short stint and came out to darkness of course. But I had received a text that our package had arrived. So we got home and were able to put up our newly purchased garland from Costco. Very festive! Looks nice, huh? I know, it’s not Thanksgiving yet, but we couldn’t wait. Mom even lit her Christmas candle, Red Apple Wreath.

Saturday we learned that the colder weather is really starting to affect the plants. Some of the flowers are struggling to stay alive. Mom took down her tomato plant and we noticed the gardeners have taken out some plants in some of the flower beds. We went into the library at 10am and stayed super busy all day. We seemed to move from one assignment to another, filling in for people and each other all day long and suddenly it was 6pm before we knew it. It’s funny how fast time can go by when you are busy. I know it doesn’t speed up or go any faster, but it sure seems like it. One of the last things I got to do was help a lady find the husband of her great great great grandfather who lived in Sweden. We looked and looked and looked through a bunch of records and were pretty sure we knew who it might be, but couldn’t nail it down for sure. We ran out of time, so I told her now that she knew how to look through the records she had her homework laid out to verify who he was. She left happy that she had homework. We got home and the Henkels came over and visited for awhile. They have moved
their mission end date again. They are finishing up on November 27th. It will be sad to see them go, they have been such fun friends. We then watched another Christmas movie, Mystery on Mistletoe Lane. We thought it would most likely be a lot like every other Hallmark Christmas movie plot, but it wasn’t. It was kind of fun with a treasure hunt mystery for the kids and a plot twist at the end. Of course the girl and guy fell in love, that’s a given for all Hallmark movies, but it wasn’t as cheesy as most of these seem to be. We recommend it.

Today, Sunday, was our ward’s primary program. We learned our primary is much larger than we thought it was. I think they got every potential kid to show up. There were probably 30 or more there. They did a great job. Then we had our Leadership Pattern Journey class followed by a One Heart gathering where the new missionaries introduced themselves and the missionaries that are leaving said goodbye and shared their testimonies. The Henkels were the last ones to share. Afterwards we took off to take some bread to Mom’s ministering sister, Naomi. While there we did the Relatives Around Me thingy on the Family Tree app and I learned I am 4th cousins with both her and her husband, through my Zera Pulsipher line of course. Mom was related to her husband.
So the day is now over and we are relaxing. Mom is finishing her Christmas apron. I’m writing this blog post while listening to Christmas music that Mom turned on, and we are enjoying the soft glow of Christmas lights from the garland on top of our kitchen cabinets. Merry Christmas! Oh wait, not yet…sorry.
I hope you had a great week like we did.
Love you all baie baie!
BE GOOD!
Elder and Sister Mom and Dad
